Unfortunately you will need a service tool.
It is called a dipstick and is used to check level only.
It doesnt stay in tube.
Can be got from a dealer or Ebay or Online parts places.

Hi Bazzel,

I have read your posts for a while now, and I am getting my stuff together to change my transmission fluid. Can you tell me how to make a dip stick? I looked at ebay and there are a ton on there, not sure which one I need. Also, yes I will use MB oil and stuff. One question though, for draining the differential - would there not be a plug under there on a 2001? If there is not, you are saying that I have to change this 2 times after a couple hundred miles? I sure hope not! Also, is it necessary for me to buy a torx wrench? I don't have one but my neighbor may have one. You also talked about turning the transmission in order to drain the differential. Where is that located?? I don't know all of the parts!!!! I iwll try and follow your instructions to the tee.

Thanks a bunch for your help. You are a very knowledgable on this stuff and it is greatly appreciated.

From about 1998 on there is no torque convertor drain plug.
Just suck out a couple of litres evary week or so a couple of times thru dipstick filler hole.
I use a vacumn oil pump to drain my engine oil thru dipstick for the engine. Same can be used for subsequent draing of trans after initial filter change. I have a 6.5 litre one.
