Default Convertible top not working!

Hi! I have a SLK 230 which is a '99 model. Recently I had a problem with my convertible...the roof would not retract. Was informed by the Mercedes dealer that 2 of the cylinders for the hydraulics of the roof have failed and that I would have to replace all the cylinders to ensure smooth functioning. Please let me know if I have to change all or just the two? Can I repair the damaged cylinders? Is there an address in Frankfurt/Munich which will have the spares. Can I order them from India and I can pick it up next week as I am going to Germany on a visit for a week.
Thanks! Ajay

Hi,

Many things can prevent the roof from working correctly.
However without seeing the vehicle, or having comprehensive symptoms, it is difficult to say what might be wrong.

If a "mechanic" has diagnosed the cylinders then I have no reason to doubt that diagnosis HOWEVER what is supposed to be wrong with the cylinders that prevent them from working.

Maybe they are leaking SLIGHTLY and this has caused the pump oil reservoir to go below minimum and therefore fail to deliver the required pressure. If so although there may be a "slight" leak it may be expediant to leave this condition as is on an ageing vehicle unless you can secure some alternative cylinders "at the right price"!!.

I can't see how a cylinder can fail so badly that it doesn't work unless there is a LOT of oil leaking from it. i.e. ruptured sealos

ALL cylinders rather than two also seems over the top. From a Quality Assurance point of view changing all might be a good idea BUT it all depends on who is paying.

If the oil reservoir level is correct then I suggest the failure is due to an electrical or adjustment type issue rather than hydraulics.

So exactly what happens when you move the "Open" button.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. Actually when you press the button there is the red light that comes on but thats all that happens. When we checked the pump oile reservoir we found that there was very little oil left. Is it possible to get a cost for these cylinders as here in India they say that it has to be imported.

A leak (small) wouldn't stop the pump working so suggest you do as previous poster has suggested.
