While driving, did not hear anything, did not feel anything. All of a sudden the battery "idiot" light goes on, loose power steering and the temp pegs. Popped the hood and BAAM! The belt is just laying there with the harmonic balancer pulley at a 45 deg. angle. When I went to get the part they said that this is a common problem. Why is there not a recall for it? Or was I given falty info?

 

fortunately you weren't in the middle of nowhere.

we have service measure on belts and that was about your model.

the dealer should have checked and recall cars on their responsibility area.

 

If yours is the V-6 Model, I do believe you can get this covered by MBZ --- Contact 1-800-FOR_MERCedes with your VIN number and say that you are calling about the "Harmonic Balancer Service Campaign" and see what they have to say.

If you've forked out money, you should be able to get reimbursed.
