Hi, I'm in the market for a 2003-2006 SL500. What are the major upgrades between the 03, 04 and 05 model years? Prices on the AMG's have dropped and even considered that model due to low productions numbers and sheer performance. Thx in advance for your feedback.

 

My advice to an R230 shopper is simple. If you are on a budget, buy an '03 or an '04 and let your preference for the transmission dictate your choice. According to M-B the 7-speed introduced in '04 offers slightly better performance, but some people prefer the 5-speed. Quoting Jeremy Clarkson of Britain's Top Gear:

[the 7-speed has] two more cogs than you need. Or want.

If you have the luxury of spending more, then consider an SL55 or an SL600 for their power; or skip the '05 and '06 500 and go for the '07 SL500/SL550. Because while the difference between an '04 and an '05-'06 is basically just a navigation system; the difference between an '06 and an '07 is 80 peak horsepower and various minor technical refinements.

 

Thanks Bob. I want to stay in the $35k range but will move to $45k if I can find a SL55. There does not seem to be a big price difference between the 03-04 based on what's on the market right now. I figure I'll buy the newest model at that price point. The 1 thing I do want is the sport package option package.

 

Has anyone dealt with World ECM for computer module repair? I am sending a 600SL top control module for rebuilding.
