Trans linkage on 79 450 SL
Sounds like what you mean is called "flaring". Does the engine race for a second between shifts? If so, this could be a stuck modulator valve. The modulator valve is located on the drivers side of the tranny and is connected by a single vacuum hose. This devise dampens transmission shifts between gears, as without this modulator valve, shifts would be harsh, or bang hard into each gear. They can become stuck open and cause flaring, or a leak in the vac hose would render harsh banging shifts. Low transmission fluid, or clogged tranny filter, can cause flaring too, so check that first, second I would begin looking at the modulator valve. Beyond that, I would have a specialist determine cause. [&:]
