Default Steering linkage squeek

I had a nasty squeek turning the steering wheel and these days they don't provide a zerk on anything, so what do you do? what I did right or wrong was to puncture the grease boot on the linkage in question with an awl. I put my needle nozzle on my grease gun and then pushed the nozzle into the very small puncture, enough to cover the point, being careful not to enlarge the puncture anymore than the pin hole, and geased it. It worked so well I did it to all of them. The excess will just squirt back out of the puncture leaving just the right amount of firmness to the boot. This will probably only work as long as the boots are still pliable and you don't over do it rupturing the boot.
