I've always loved the SL500 and can now purchase a used one.

Look for insulation falling off the wires in the engine bay (specifically the harness on the engine), and if you see it, either make them fix it before you buy it, or just walk away because they can get pretty expensive to fix.

RE: SL320 or SL500 as a commuter car?
thanks for the info.
and please keep the flames out of my thread
in any case im NOT looking for a sportscar im looking for a freeway cruiser, and the convertible is a plus. im not sure if i can budget insurance, its the only thing stopping me from the purchase right now.
if i was looking for a sportscar id keep the miata and beef the hell out of it, which ive considered, but due to the commute its not the right thing to do, i need something much, much more relaxing
due to the weight of the car, does the supsension need to be redone/replaced at some point? and when is this point?

They aren't that heavy. Mine's 4,600 lbs. That's pretty heavy for two-seater but not so heavy that the suspension will get trashed prematurely. At least hope it doesn't. If the SL500 suspension is anything like the SL600's you'll need to mortgage the home to replace it.

Yeah and so A miata handles good too but who cares. It's about the better car overall anyways. Unless ya the next Jeff Gordan or something doing 160mph in some winding backwood road, handling takes a back seat as long as it's okay. A Mercedes handles well enough to fly down a highway and pass who ever you need to pass (especially if you have a SL600. Talk about a beast! It makes a SL500 seem a little sluggish for real. No wonder they made the SL55. Just to keep up.
