Default Should I buy this 500SL

Yea, so I found a 1992 500SL convertible for 5000 dollars with only 89k miles, should I buy it?

I don't know if he has the hardtop though, which I need.

What should I look out for when buying one of these? And what's the maintenance schedule?

You should probably buy that car. Even if it has no engine and transmission it is probably worth more than $5000 in parts.

The maintenance schedule is in the owner's manual.

A 1990-1992 500SL has to be the best value there is in a Mercedes-Benz convertible, in my opinion. I am going to look at a 1992 for sale in Atlanta later this morning. Asking price is $6800, mileage is 140K.

Check for proper function of electrical equipment: convertible top, power seats, power mirror adjustment, windshield wiper, and power steering wheel adjustment. Check the climate control: A/C, heater, and blower operation at all 4 fan speeds. Check locking system both via key and remote and listen for the pump in the right side of the trunk: it should run for just a few seconds -- running for more than 10 seconds indicates a vacuum leak.

If you perform your own repairs, these cars are relatively inexpensive to own. They are easy to work on, and Mercedes has all the repair and troubleshooting information you need available on a DVD for about $85. Used parts are not hard to find -- I have many available for sale from a 1992 SL.

bobterry do you have a top controller that you know works? I'm still fighting with my top.. I've sent the controller to BBA three times now. first two times I got it back it worked about ten times and would start acting up. pump won't activate. last time, no change. all micro-switches are ok and I get no codes. if yours is good, what's the damages?

Yes, I have a top controller from a 1992 300SL. This works with all R129 manufactured through December of 1993. I have to do some research to set a price -- my price will be the lowest of any price I can find. My guess is it will be $350-$500. I'll know by Monday afternoon.

as far as I know all 129 hard tops are the same. with help from a husky friend it's easy enough to try her on for size.
