Default R&R Timing cover

Got a 84 model 380SL with an oil leak between the timing cover and engine block.
I have followed WIS to the line but just can't seem to take the timing cover off. It says clearly the heads don't have to come off but what about the bottom pan. I took the crank seal off but I think its the chain and gear that is holding the lower part of the cover in. I read using a thin wire to reinsert the chain on the gear during assembly. So does it then meanthe oil pan MUST come off ??
Any tips or trick on this job ??
