Default Low fuel signal then CHECK ENGINE

Yesterday, with a full tank of gas, the low fuel signal began to flash. (capwas on tightly). After two or three key off/key on cycles, I was able to make it stop. Then the CHECK ENGINE light came on. I will wait to see if it resets after three cold starts per the manual. If not, diagnostic will be next.
Anybody ever had or heard of this problem before.???
Any help or advice will be appreciated

Boston Joe

I would suggest to check the following:

There could be a fault in either the rear SAM (located behind rear passenger seat in floorwell) or fuel gauge sensor.

Problem solved- bad fuel tank cap. Replaced with OEM cap and reset check engine light.

Milen: I had a local non-MB repairman put his OBD analyzer on it to find the gas cap problem and he reset the CHECK ENGINE light at the same time. Your local MB dealer should be able to reset ...maybe for free. Turns out the gasket on the gas cap gets worn and after only 40,000 miles and 7 years, it wore to the point where the vapors must have been getting by and the symptoms started.
