Location....crankshaft position sensor?

Location....crankshaft position sensor?
1994 sl 500. 5.0 eng. Can someone give me the location of the sensor. I;v looked at the back of the engine and the top of the bell housing and can't find anything. Has anyone had any luck cleaning it and putting it back?

on my 300sl it's above the starter flange on the bell-housing. why do you think this is the problem? those are usually depenable
