By console, do you mean the lamps by the rearview mirror?

Frank, I double checked mine today after I read your post. If you want the overhead reading lamps to come on when you open the door, you have to first press the toggle switch on the drivers side to the left. Yours should have a little icon of a door/window on it. Simply press this toggle, then the light will come on/off with the opening/closing of the door.

Hi all, I am trying to get my interior lights (roof level) to come on when I open the doors. Presently the foot well lights do come on when the doors are opened. The rocker switch at roof level for this function does not latch to either left or right, is this correct ? and if so what is the procedure to ensure the roof level lights illuminate each time the doors are opened ? or have I got a faulty rocker switch that fails to lock into position. Any help would be greatly apprecriated. (2000 SL500)

If the toggle/rocker switches fail to hold when moved to the left or right positions, then they both need to be replaced if you expect the lamps to illuminatewhen opening the door.

Thanks Bob, I guess the next question is how do I get the switches out of their shroud around the rear view mirror. All this plastic feels very secure !!! Cheers, Ken

Ken,
When I reached the point you have, as well as personally beingmechanically and electically dysfunctional, I took the car to my Indy who replaced both switches in less than an hour. I believe to get to the retaining mechanism for the plastic surround/switch cover plate, the rearview mirror has to come out. Then, supposedly it's pretty straight forward from there. Someone else that's done this job is better equipped to comment on steps to accomplish, or try a search on 'rear view mirror' or rearview mirror'. Good luck-

Bob
