Default Installing an aftermarket radio in a SL600

Has anybody ever replaced the factory radio in an SL600 before? I'm looking to replace the factory Bose system with an aftermarket radio/navigation unit. Several radio shops including Best Buy and Circuit city said that no kit or wiring harness is available for my car and that a dash kit would have to be custom made. Any advise would be appreciated!!!

Just remember that your current radio has a auto volume control. This turns the audio volume down when things are quiet in the car, eg...... driving with the top down, when car is stoped it sets a lower volume and as you speed up the volume is increased. This is controled by a mirophone sensor which auto-adjusts by the ambiant noise in the **** pit [not based on speed]. It is common in most late MB models and a feature that I highly value.

I have looked for a similar exchange unit for my older SL but have had no luck in finding a current manufacurer that has an auto volume control. I do not know where MB or other luxury makers get their own units. If you find one, please let us know.

Re. wiring and instalation. I suspect any specialty auto audio shop can do the job. However, if you have a very recent model year, there may not be any adaptor face plates available that would allow a different unit mount. Again, a good shop will know.
Good luck.
