Smile Front lock on Convertible top 96 SL500

I have a 96SL500 that the right front lock for the soft top makes a sound like a gunshot when it releases. Does this lock have any adjustment so that it can be quieter like the left front. It is so loud, people turn around in the parking lot when I put the soft top down and it releases. Previously I remember a post that had pictures of how to remove these cylinders, does anyone remember that site or post? I have tried a search but have not found it. Thanks.

I've had some problems here and there. This is a first for me. have you tried putting a smidgen of grease or oil in/on the latch assembly? have you lifted the top just enough see if the right side catch and latch looks and feels just like the left? nothing LOOSE, broke or bent.? I think your cylinder is ok, unless it leaks. I've never heard of one bending and that would really take some doin'..they're pretty stout, but with that kind of a noise, who knows.

I put a spray of silicone on it after wiping some black gook off in the windshield bow latch. It appears to be working a little quieter. I haven't lubed the actual top as it seems to get out of sync easily when stopped mid cycle. ie tonneau open or soft hood partway up.
using terminology bonnet, hood, boot.

have you checked the fluid level of the system's pump under your spare? might try cleaning the wire contectors to the controller under the rear storage compartment. obviously your top shouldn't get out of sync like that. If you can find another good used top controller, it sure can save a lot of headaches in diagnosing problems when you can eliminate that as a possible problem first, plus have a spare if you have to send yours in for repair. then put the repaired one back in on return to check it against the working one. put the spare back on the shelf for the next time. sometimes you get lucky and find one for around $500.
