Default Entering radio code

I got the code for reseting the radio but not sure how to imput. The radio in the car (99 sl 500) also has a phone do you use the phone key board? If not the radio must be an after market and I understand you have to remove the radio to get the serial number. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Not sure about a 99 SL 500 but on my 92 SL 500 you just use the radio presets to enter the code. You can obtain the code for the radio by either pulling it and getting the serial number or use the cars VIN number, either will work at your local MB dealer.

There are only 4 presets and the 5 diget code has a 6 in it. There is a phone key board to the right but I didn't think it was part of the radio.

The 'phone key board', as you call it, is where you input the radio code. This will activate your radio, assuming it's the original radio that came with the car. If a previous owner changed the radio, but kept the original Becker design, then you will have to pull the radio (uses two 'keys' at the bottom left corners of the radio to see if the code has been written on the case. If it's not there, you may have to contact Becker USA, give them the serial number of the radio, and for a fee, they'll provide the code.
