My mechanic recently told me that my engine timing chain has broken and affected my pistons causing lots of damage. to fix it will cost about 5-6000 I found a 420 engine from a 420SEL I was told that the basic engine was the same is this true? if I do use this engine can my car still be called a 560SL or a 560SL with a 420 engine.. is this a good choice? will the horse power be the same?any help would be apprciated

My guess is that you may mean that the valves were out of sync and hit the crown of the pistons. If this is the case it pushes the valve up into the cam shaft and causes a lot of damage.
I also think there are a lot of $4000, $5000 cars out there that have good engines. You could buy a car with a good engine and swap. Also, there are non-SLs that are cheaper.
A used engine in a used car is likely much cheaper and .... why not.
Or, buy another car - The cars are cheap now
Just my though on the topic
