560SL engine stumble
i have a 1988 560sl that i've owned for about 12 years...no major problems in the past but have an issue that appears in the cooler times of the year. if you don't allow the car to warm up before driving it acts as if the engine is flooding out like a carb engine. you don't have the black smoke as in a flood issue but the the engine begins to miss like it's only running on a few cylinders. it continues until the car finally stops in traffic and eventually cut off. you can then crank the car and it runs like a new vehicle.any ideas ??
I as well as others on this forum have had the same problem. Replace the plugs and the plug wires also check the distributor cap. Its likely that ur losing resistivity some where and if the wires are original as mine were thats more than likely the problem.
If it only happens when the weather turns cold and stays cold (during winter), it's a good chance water is condensing in your fuel somewhere.
Try a can of gas treatment, like STP or such. Something that removes moisture from the gas.
If that helps, change your brand of gas to something else. The moisture may be in the station's storage tank(s).
Try to keep the tank as full as possible when you park, especially overnight. Less air space in the tank means less chance of condensation.
A tune-up never hurts and cold weather can exaggerate tuning issues, so still do any tune-up things you were planning.
