Default Bumpy Ride in my 600SL

I've got a 1993 600SL that'sgiving me a bumpy ride. The suspension feels good and tight and the car otherwise looks, rides and runs extremely well. The only issue is thatwhen you go over certain bumps in the road it feels like you're ridinga bucking bronco.

The dealer says that I need to replace thefront and rear suspension ballsat a cost of $1,700. I don't mind doing that if it solves the problem, but I'd hate to do the repair and find that it rides the same. I've made the appointment to have the repair done but wanted to check and see ifanyone else has experienced a similar problem and have any advice for me?

I was also wondering if anyone knew of an insert that might be available to switch out the cassette holder in the console with a cup holder? I think I've seen that in newer models but haven't been able to source one for my 1993.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rick H

Check out this thread. https://mercedesforum.com/m_73069/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

I had / have the same problem. Still working on it. Turns out the tires were out of round when I bought the -car from sitting for too long. New tires took care of about 75% of the problem. I suggest starting with the inexpensive stuff first. Check the balance first then check if the tires are flat spotted or out of round. Please let me know how your work turns out as I need to find the other 25% on mine.

Thanks Doug, I've had the tires balancedalready and it made a big differencein the ride at highway speeds, but it still gets quite bouncy on certain uneven road surfaces. I'mhaving the work done on Tuesday and I'll post how it works out.

I just recently purchased a '93 600 SL that had been sitting for almost a year. It had much of the same issues with the bumpy ride and all. Figured the tires had flat spots and over inflated each one to about 45psi. After about 90 miles of highway driving, let the air out to about 30psi and it completely solved the problem.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't believe it's possible that tire balancing will take care of the flat spot issue.

I just thought I'd post an update to my bouncy ride problem.

I had the suspension ***** replaced by Mercedes last week and it has completely fixed the problem. The total cost of the repair was $1,445 plus tax (I got a 15% discount under their "vintage car program") but I took the car ona 600 kilometer road trip this past weekend and it felt like a brand new vehicle.

Rick,

Thanks for the update. Good to hear your problem was solved. Looks like that will be my next step to solve my ride issue.
