Default 76 450sl. Spuddering occasionally

Hi guys I'm new here. My dad sent me down his 76 450sl. It runs great then spudders like it wants to die. The fuel pump is making a loud buzzing sound. I am going to replace it. Could this be why it's spuddering? Or is this a common thing with older Mercedes? Any help?

Dan

we'll soon find out if you are replacing it anyway because of the noise. check with autohausaz.com or genuinemercedesparts.com for a price on the pump and replace the filter too and u might want to check on some hose clamps if you want change it yourself. it's not uncommon for fuel pumps to eventually go bad. when mine went out at about 95,000 miles, it would on occasion not start easily and would sputter or lose power on acceleration and over time got worse. has it been setting for a awhile? old gas can cause some problems. how old are the plugs, points, distributor cap and rotor. look at your vacuum hoses. when you do change your points check on electronic points and you'll never have to replace them again. good luck on the car, it should be a lot fun for you. they are well made and less complicated than the later model sl's.

if the pump doesn't solve the problem, maybe a fuel accumulator or coil

Where is the fuel accumulator? And the "coil" , is that the ignition coil you are talking about.

Well i havent chenged the fuel pump. But i did change the plugs and wires. There were 2 wires that were so worn, when i pulled them gently, they broke. I replaced them and the car runs great! No spuddering yet.
