Default 2003 SL500 Dip Stick

The Owners Manual shows an oil dip stick at the engine front left side. However, there is none at this location, but there is a caped tube at the engine rear that could either be for tranny fluid or engine oil. Guess I need to buy a maintenance manual.

Since posting my question, learned from reviewing MB parts manuals that the M113 E50 engine does not provide for an engine oil dipstick, as one member suggested. However, the capped tube at the engine rear provides for checking the tranny fluid when in for maintenance. A calibrated dip stick is provided as part of the mechanic's tool kit. Probably MB's thinking is that if you can afford one, you should be able to afford maintenance costs.

The newer model Mercedes do not come with an oil dipstick. That is a bummer. I have a 2005 E320 and it does not have a dipstick also. Don't know why Mercedes does not provide a dipstick. I guess I come from the old school in that I want to be able to check my oil. I do not trust all of these new fangled things on cars today like electronic monitoring of your oil level.
