Default 1995 sl600 check engine light

hello everyone, new to this forum because i've recently bought a 1995 sl600. Got a great deal on it and is in excellent shape, 91,000 miles. Only thing is, that it has check engine light on and am told cars before 96' don't have obd2 ports. my question is, is how do i check the code without it or am i stuck taking it into the dealer? Thank you in advance, ive searched the internet and am unable to come up w/ some sort of answer. Car seems to be running great

check for vacuum leaks. make sure vacuum pump is working. It's not an exact science, even with codes it's a guess as to what in the secondary air injection system could be the problem. it could be an oxygen sensor, airflow sensor, bad vacuum hose, pump etc. generally it won't cause you to break down someplace. I would check hoses first, then pull a line off the vacuum pump to see if it works, then change 02 sensor.

Many stations will reset it for you. I would make certain the gas cap is nice and tight. My 96 SL500 has a secondary click.

Since it's pre OBD2, it makes it difficult to run codes. You'll have to grab a manual with the codes listed and count the number of blinks that the module makes - this in turn matches a code in the book. I would suggest having the dealer take care of the codes if you're not too familiar with the process.
