Default 1981 380 SL timing belt question

I just inherited a 1980 380SL from my son who went to Iraq. I am aware of the timing belt issue with this model but I need to know how does a non-mechanic tell if the engine has already been converted to a double row belt/chain? The car needs other restroation work and I don't know if I will keep the car if I need this extra expense as well. Thanks

Default 380SL timing chain

I was told by a 380 owner to plan on spending $7K to convert it to a 2X chain.
For that kind of money you could get a 560SL without the problems and have the 380 for a parts car..
