Default S320 Airmatic problem?

Hi everyone,

I have an S320 1999. This morning the car behaved in quite a peculiar way. I turned the engine off after a short commute and a fan kept running. It sounded as if it was coming from the front right of the engine bay (near side for UK, off side for US, etc). It was leftrunning but shortly afterwards it started to making a hissing noise. It sounded as if it was releasing air and this was happening every second or two. I turned the engine off and then on again. The air releasing noise stopped but was replaced by a loud shuddering as if something was about to break! Engine off and on again and it stopped. All seems OK now except the car is not rising up on start up or with the 'raise suspension' button on. No malfunction light is on.

Any thoughts? Do I need a new mortgage?

sounds and noises like yours will be very hard to discuss, bring it to a pro MB shop and let them diagnose why you have such noise.

This may be one of the following:

[ol][*]Leaking seal at top of Shock absorber - need to replace whole unit,[*]Faulty solenoid within shocker absorber,[*]Fault compressor / pump PLUS one of the above that caused it to happen in the first place...[/ol]
Hope this helps

Many thanks for the replies above.

I had my local garage replace the fuse (no.32), the relay with a Hella and the compressor. The car is now at normal height and the 'wade' function works fine. All seems normal...

However, the compressor makes a noise as if it's working quite hard every time the car starts after being stood for a little while. It's really quite loud and vibrates quite hard. This can go on for a good few minutes at a time. This is obviously not normal and I would suggest a leak somwhere but where? The car is perfectly flat and levels if on a slight incline!

Having fallen out with our local MB dealer I am very reluctant to take it there and the next nearest MB dealer is 90 miles away. I have a very capable independent local mechanic and hope any information you can give will point him in the right direction. Tim
