Default Proper oil filter install

Hello-

I recently bought a 1987 420 SEL, but I have had a few older Mercedes in my time. I am used to the oil filter changes in the diesels, but I was a little perplexed when I changed the oil in the 420 a few weeks ago. The kit came with a small gray washer, the rubber gasket, and a copper-colored washer that was rounded, and not flat(like a hula hoop). I did not see where the copper washer came from, so I did not put it on with the new filter, gasket and grey washer. Can someone tell me what this copper washer is for, and where it goes when you do the oil change?

Thanks,

-Christian

Ok good....so I didnt necessarily HAVE to put it in then. I was afraid it was made to put on the bottom of the filter to give oil draining out of the filter clearance, or something to that extent.[8D]
