Default P0170 and P0136 Help!

Any Help! would be appreciated!
1998 S320 W140
I am pulling more and more frequent P0170 (fuel trim)DTCs and the occasional P0136 (down stream HO2S). I am in Flagstaff and none of the repair shops say they can pull my long or short term fuel trim. The car runs perfectly, no hesitation, backfires, etc. No other codes. Is there any way to narrow down whether my fuel trim is pegging high or low or whether it's a MAF issue or fuel regulator issue (or other issue). I don't think it's an intake vacuum issue due to the running so well. Thanks! g

HI G,

Maybe LTFT / STFT is not available on w140 but I would have expected it to have been. Anyway I don't believe we require this data.

In the absence of this data you will have to go with the code P0170 = Fuel Trim BANK 1. i.e. The fuelling system can't achieve the desired mixture (as measured by the O2 sensor) by altering the injector firing width. Run out of permitted range.

P0136 = O2 Sensor Circuit malfunction on Bank 1 Sensor 2 (nearest tailpipe). Where did you get your code definition data from? Looks like yours was incorrect.

So this seems to point categorically to a Bank 1 Sensor 2 O2 sensor or circuit (connector) failure. This is why the P0170 is just on one bank. The MAF would affects banks since there is only one MAF.

O2 sensors don't last forever. 9 years (unless already replaced) is not bad. Service history will dictate whether you change one or possibly two / four sensors.

Hope this pinpoints your problem.

Stuart.

Great Info! Thanks Stuart!
The P0136was just my novice/poor translation of Bank 1 Sensor 2. I think it's the Passenger Side sensor AFTER the C. Converter. Thanks again. You and this forum are GREAT! Thanks to the other posts, I just figured out my climate control problem: Slowly death of Blower Motor Relay. Shop guessed $500 plus to figure it out. Part cost $163 and about 10 minutes work! I really appreciate it! g
