Default OK, so what is the best tire for the S5004?

I have studied several posts in this forum and in a few others searching for the 'perfect' tire for my 2005 S500 4-matic with low profile AMG wheels (sport package, all stock). I would love to hear some forum members chime in with their opinions. Please don't forget tomention your experience with tirewear.

James54,

Good evening. Regarding tires for anS class; Though I recently replaced my '06 S430 [with an '08 CLK550Cab - see Photo Gallery; Gulf_Guy], I was quite pleased with my off-set Mich-Pilot Sports.Never getting more than 10k milesfrom any tireon any car I've owned- these tires really held the road- dryor wet.

IMHO w220 is heavy on tyres!

Best to stick with manufacturer recommended brands and sizes otherwise you run the risk of noise / vibration issues especially on smooth tarmac.
The noise difference between one tyre and another is considerable.
The grip difference between one and another only shows up at the limit and is usually way above the performance you can use on public roads.

Since you are already away from standard wheel sizes (although presumably an AMG approved size) I can offer no specific recommendation.
My experience however is that Pirelli are noisy. Conti wear evenly, less shoulder wear, but are also harsh/noisy whilst Michelin / Dunlop are the quietest. Mich appears better for life (harder compound?). in the USA Mich actually warrant for 100k miles!! I find this hard to believe but I have it in writing from Michelin. Of course there are no bends in USA unlike Europe. with careful driving 20k seems nearer to the mark and your experience is 10k.

Overall I like Michelin. Tyres are a compromise. Long life and ultimate grip don't go together. Low profile and ride don't go together etc etc. So where is your priority?

Good Luck. I hope you will be pleased with your final choice.

The manufacturers spend lots of money, and often have tyres developed specially for their vehicle,in order to enhance a specific characteristic of a new car. A good example here is the Dunlop on the BMW developed Rover 75. Extremely quiet running.

Stuart.
