I recently purchased a gently used 126 and am a bit concerned about the correct date of the vehicle.
It was sold a a 1980 SEL shipped to NY in 1986 by its original owner.

I appreciate your help in running the serial number in this. Hopefully some of the veterans will read this and lend their experience to my dilemma over finding the truth about the year of his vehicle. First let me say that this is not a trick question but it seems the answer is tricky.
Let me lay out the facts as I have had them presented to me.

The 500 SEL in question is a Euro version ( and Im told that opens up huge doors leading to vague hallways) The car was imported in 1986. I have that documentation. The car was registered and a title obtained as a 1980 500 SEL. The serial number comes back as an approximate 1990 Benz. Soooo..the paperwork says 1980...and the numbers say 1990. I can deal with the car's approximate birthday but a decade swing!...Thats a little much.

I went to the local Benz dealer and the serial number doesnt register on their computer network. So is this car for real or is it just lost in translation?

Check the Vin stampped on the firewall and see if its the same VIN as the one u posted. Also check some of the other VIN stickers on the front fenders and the truck and if they are different let me know and i will look up those VINs for you.
