Default Gas Gauge problem

Hello guys! I'm driving 1996 S 500 coupe,lately I'm expereincing problem with gas gauge.Sometimes the needle will jump all the way to empty and then slowly goes back up to its place. What do you think the problem is? Thanks.

i think it is the fuel level sensor.

inside the fuel tank.

open the trunk and remove the cover (center). you will see the wires running through it.
