All MB electical problems
The following is a quote from another MB site. I hope they don't mind me quoting it here. I think probably the writer is correct and is giving pretty good advice. We had a lister on this site a ways back who listed the number of times the proposed purchase had been in for electrical repairs. I think the following quote explains the problem. If you get a car with electrical problems, the problems will continue.
"The electrical problems originated at the factory. They have nothing to do with mileage. Before you buy, ask to see the VMI, which is a complete history of repairs. If there are electrical repairs in the past, I can promise you there will be electrical repairs in the future. I have challenged any MB Mechanic/Service Mgr./SAE engineer to prove me wrong...if so I'll pay them $10,000. No takers after 100,000 page views on my challenge. Check the VMI. If they won't show it to you, leave. "

GOOD ADVICE to look at the vehicle history when you make you choice BUT I don't go along with once problems, always problems.
If the faults are correctly diagnosed and repaired..replacement parts with or whatever, there is no reason why the problem, or new problems, should (re)occur.
I agree that SOME problems arise from "the factory"... e.g. Ground point incorrectly tightened for instance. This can give VERY strange symptoms BUT once this fault is diagnosed there SHOULD be no more problems.
Its all down to the TECHNICIAN at the specific dealership and of course if a problem does occur during MB Warranty there is no excuse for this not being effectively resolved since MB will be paying.
NO PROBLEMS is obviously BEST, but if a car has had a problem I do not believe that this is a reason for not buying that car subject to deal etc.

Stuart,
What you are saying would seem to make sense, but how often have we heard of owners having constant electrical problems...over and over? Could it be that the MB tech people can't propery diagnose the faults and therefore resolve the problems successfully?

Diagnosing electrical faults is difficult unless you have the correct equipment and expertise.
MB techicians have both of these so there should be no excuse for not getting the diagnosis and repair correct.
I believe that the dealer network in the US is very different to here in UK and therefore the equipment and training of technicians (in MB fault diagnosis) may be less comprehensive than over here.
I have to agree however that..If the car hasn't got any fault history that it is more likely to give ongoing faultless service.
I only put forward my thoughts that fault history DOES NOT equal onging problems so long as the faults are correctly diagnosed and corrected.
The biggest problem is that some technicians mis-diagnose a problem and introduce further faults along the way. (Manufacturing Process Control (=Quality) is undermined)
