I recently purchased a 1983 380 SEL and have just one question about a mechanical issue. The air pump has been disconnected from the belt by the previous owner. The pulley seems to be siezed. I also smell exhaust fumes in the cabin with the ac on. Is the smell issue related to the smog pump being disconnected? What other side effects can the pump being deleted cause? Thank you!!

That smog pump is suppose to be part of the emission system. disconnecting that thing may cause you to fail it. Since your car is an 83 and thus 25 and up 90% of the states dont require smog testing for cars that old so if it's disconnected then it's just disconnected.
The exhaust smell should not be related to the smog pump. You might have an exhaust leak near near the firewall area and the blower motor is pulling it inside the cabin.
In my 560SEL back in the day the smog pump been disconnected apparently since I bought the car until I decided to put the belt back on before I shipped it off to Germany since I had no idea who jurisdiction I actually fell under as regarding car stuff there (the army usually have some type of back door agreement wit hthe host nation dealign with that stuff). While I was over there I didnt get smoged tested (even though the German citizens have to go through a very strigent smog test which more than likely I would've failed without that smog pump.) The running patterns of the rest of the car and performance I didnt notice any difference and no ill effects.
