96 S500 Question - What are the 4 inch rear protrusions that rise upwards in reverse?

Default 96 S500 Question - What are the 4 inch rear protrusions that rise upwards in reverse?
I cannot fathom what these are for. The raise when the car is put into reverse. I haven't been able to find anything in the owners manual, and I am starting to obsess over this...lol.

Reverse aids? Well thats answers something, but still not clear what the indicator is...have to go out and try to back into the car behind me to see what lights up or sounds a tone...

the antennas are factory. yes they aid in telling you where the back of the car is.

if you're hearing a noise its something aftermarket. unless you have a factory rear parktronic.
