2001 S500 TRANSMISSION PROBLEM?
HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH 2001 S500 TRANSMISSION AT AROUND 44,000 MI? TRANS JUST QUITS SHIFTING, AND JUST STAYS IN 4TH GEAR (HIGH). WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I NEED TO PULLOVER AND RESTART; THAN EVERYTHING GOES BACK TO NORMAL (FOR A WHILE). IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM? IS IT EASILY FIXED OR DOES IT TAKE A NEW TRANSMISSION? EVERYTHINGS ELECTRONIC TODAY!
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLYS

I am not sure if it is the same problem, but I have a 1994 S500 that did the same thing. After researching, I found that there are sensors on each axle that detect when your wheels are rotating at different speeds. This in my case was caused by my tires being inflated to different PSI. I pumped up my tires to proper PSI and problem gone.
Hope this helps.

It doesn't sound like a normal problem, but if all you have is 4th gear, it sounds like something is burnt up and you need a new or re-built transmission. You would definitely want to pay the 38 dollars or so to have it checked to be sure. Interestingly, my 97 Cadi did the same thing as you've described about a year ago. A module was blown, 1st, 2d, and 3rd gear were gone! Cheapest to replace the transmission, which wasn't so cheap. But it was still cheaper than buying another car with unknown problems. So, I replaced the tranny, and now it's all good again.
Let us know what you find out.

2nd gear is engaged for limp-home mode.
atf is fine?
common problem is the rpm sensor inside the valve body cracked.
please check the transmission control unit if it is FILLED WITH OIL. see if the connector is WET. i found so many like this.

I guess a couple of questions would be in order.
Again, glad you're back Sleepwalker.
1. Is this person mechanically inclined, and have tools?
2. Are they interested in tackling this issue themselves?
or,
3. Would it be cheaper to take to a transmission shop to check?
and,
4. Would replacement be cheaper?
In my area, no one even messes with trying to fix them, they just find a re-man and replace them. Transmission shops in my area won't hardly even touch them, if they can find a rebuild.

Hello All,
Just wondering if you ever figured out the problem. I have a 00 S500 that will run fine then all of a sudden I will get a hard shift and then I am stuck in a lower gear until the car is restarted. It seems like the same problem you were having. Just wondering what the outcome was or if anyone else has any input.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Hello,
Don't know if the problem is fixed yet or not, but the characteristics of the 722.6 trans is that what ever gear it is in when it sees a problem is the gear it failsafes in. Like sleepwalker said, the are having problem with the input/output sensors on the circuit board, which is on top of the VB. They have an updated board available. Also, there is a spring in the VB that breaks that will cause you greif also. Really need to get the vehicle scanned to see what code it is to go in the right direction. Hope this helps.
