Default 126 Power Steering and Suspension Fluid Questions

I have an '86 560 SEC and a couple of questions.

-- I went to the Dealer (didn't want to wait on mailorder) and asked for hydraulic suspension fluid for the car above and they gave me "Hypoid gear oil, SAE 85 W 90". It is different than the blue-bottled stuff that actually says "hydraulic oil" that I have seen people use. Is the gear oil ok to use?

--Similarly, do the Vickers and ZF power steering pumps interchange? They look very similar, with the Vickers being off a 420SEL.

Thank You in advance for your help.

Default suspension oil

I have a 95 S-500 with a hydraulic tank for the rear suspension. Im not positive what weight hydraulic oil goes into it but I do work for a Hydraulic service company and I know that we dont and use 80w/90w in any hydraulic system due to the heavy weight of the oil and it would not work very well in winter conditions.

I would be leary putting 80/90w in my hydraulic system. Now if you are servicing your rear end I could see using that oil for that. I would think an AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil to fill the hyd reservoir but I also have to check with Mercedes for the proper weight and type oil. Hope that helps.

It certainly seemed suspicious to me too. I'm thinking that they gave me rear end fluid instead of rear suspension fluid.

I know these cars can be finicky with their fluids, and I don't want to use the wrong thing.

Any other input?

I can tell you this. With that 560 rear suspension, you'll want to put th exact fluid in that thing i.e the blue bottle stuff. The oil in itself is not too heavy and that 80/90 sounds like differential gear oil weight or something and that is too thick for that hydralic system especially cold.
The oil that goes into that hydralic fluid tank is made for that type of suspension and just any oil will not do. The oil is not expensive but if you put the wrogn stuff in there you can mess up the system and that can cost a pretty penny.

Man, I have no idea why the dealer would give you Hypoid gear oil.

As far as the interchanging power steering pumps, I dont know.
