I've got an ML320 which won't shift out of park unless you press the reset (using the filler from a ball-point pin).
While this method does work, it is tiresome to stick a pen in a $30K car every time you want to shift out of park.

My BAS/ESP light came on at the same time and I am certain they are related.

I don't want to just take it to the dealer -- suspect they will 'find' an expensive fix. Car is running fine, don't need heroics, just want to shift normally. [:-]

Has your brake light switch failed (brake lights work? cruise control work?). If yes, the good news is that this is a simple fix (and a common failure). How many miles on your ML?
