transmission low gear lock

transmission low gear lock
I have a 1999 ML320 with 62,000 miles. When turning off the engine after freeway driving and then restarting the engine, the transmission locks in a low gear and will not shift to drive. Turning off the engine and waiting several minutes usually fixes the problem but recently it has taken longer periods of time for the engine to be off before the problem is fixed. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I have a ML320 2002.
I have a problem, the transmission is locked I think in second (2) gear and the light from " check engine" is ON. I can not change the gear manual too. If I stop the engine is working for a while. Please help me. I don't have any codes

Stuck in 2nd gear means limp home mode to get you home or to repair shop.
Yes, you have fault codes but in the transmission control module, P07XX and you can't read them with OBDII scanner.
I would check the electric plug comming out of transmission for fluid in it. Clean it with contact cleaner and compressed air, if needed.
Could be low fluid level or one of the speed sensors or solenoids inside.
Star diagnostic scanner will be able to tell your exact problem.
