Default Rear Shock Replacement

I have recently developed a severe creaking noise in the rear of my 2000 ML320. I have isolated it to the upper shock absorber mount. I thought that I hade seen a few posts on how to replace the shocks on this site a long while back, but searches have proven unsuccessful. Dealer wants between $370-450 each for the rear shock with spring assembly. I thought that I read that you could replace the shock in that subassembly with no issue. It is likely that MB made the whole assembly a FRU to make it easier for their techs to replace, which seems to be the case on many fronts with this vehicle. In any case can anyone provide any insight on changing out the rear shocks and maybe even recommend a shock. I belevie that the stock units were either Sachs or KYB... I recal that there were some special tools that made the job a bit easier as well... help there would be appreciated as well!

Thanks!
