Default ML320 with strange buzz/hum

2001 ML320 (96000 mi) driven less than 1/4 mile the other day and a loud buzzing/mechanical noise occurred. It sounded as though it was coming from the left front wheel. Imediately the BAS/ESP, ETS, and ABS lights came on and the noise continued until I pulled over, took my foot off of the break and put it in park. The noise ceased, however, it occurred again when I pressed on the accelorator. In addition, with the engine off it continued to make a low hum/buzzing sound, similar to a small electronic fan. Drove the car the rest of the way home with all features working efficiently (a/c, cruise control, etc.) although the noise did continue. The breaks seemed to hesistate around turns, but otherwise worked fine. It sounded as though the noise was in the vicinity of the fuse box. With the engine off it continued to make that low hum/buzz so I removed the positive battery cable and the noise stopped! Left the cable removed over night, hooked it back up and the noise was still gone, as were all three indicator lights. Test drove it around and everything worked fine. Haven't had any issues since. Any suggestions of what may have happened or if it could potentially occur again?
