Default ML280 cdi 2006 Brake light question

One of the regular brake light bulbs ceased to function thereby resulting in the back up brake lights coming in to operation with the relevant advisory warning on the message display in the dash. I decided to buy a pair of LED replacement bulbs and fitted them. However, despite the fact that both LEDs work, they would not work in the car and the advisory message persisted. I replaced the bulbs with the "regular" filament type with success. The reason why the LEDs would not function is that, whereas the filament type provides a completed cirvuit for a (?) low voltage to pass through it thereby indicating to the ECU that a working bulb is in place, there is no such facility with an LED type fitting. Any ideas as to how this can be overcome? For example, would it be possible to insert a resistor across the terminals to provide the necessary voltage? If so, any ideas on its Ohmic value? Thanks
