Ghosts in ML 500 !!!
I keep hearing some funny noises in my ML 500 2002 around the steering just under the instrument panel. It sounds like little birds or twitters. It sometimes even goes on a little while after the ignition has been turned off. I wonder what it is. It does not happen all the time - perhaps 50% of the time. I heard and read so much about the ML before I bought one despite all odds but I never read or heard of ghosts under the hood.

Sounds like one of the tiny little cooling fans that are in several places under the dash. I replaced one about 30,000 miles ago. There are also fans under the hood behind the large fuse box that run on after shutoff....'course mine's only a 320. [&o]

I have not noticed if it still makes the noise at the operation of the turn signal. I will try it and see. I usually notice it when I am about to park. I am often too busy enjoying the drive.

if you operate the turn signal light, still got this noise?

Yes, this is normal. I had the same concern when I bought mine. There are elctric motors in the venting chamber that regulate the flaps. After the ignition is turned off the flaps return to its default position. Mine was making a clicking noise every 20 second and the buzzing noise was quite loud. I took it to the dealer and they repaired it still under warranty. They mentioned something about faulty limit or switch sensor. Something like that. It is normal for the hissing/buzzing sound to continue even up to 20 minutes after the ignition is turned off. It will stop after that.
