Default Acceleration limited, is this normal?

Today I stepped on the gas in the rain to see what the ESP would do in my 01 ML 320. I found that I lost the ability to accelerate after flooring and could go about 40-50 but the acceleration was regulated so I pulled over shut it off turned it back on and all was normal. Is this some kind of control or is something a bit screwed up. There were no lights or anythign on the dash indicating anything. I turned the ESP off and it made no difference.

Any thoughts on this?
Thanks...

John

no- its dangerous

could be your fuel pump or filter, a mass air flow sensor, a crank shaft position sensor, a plugged air filter, a plugged cat or two, igintion wires, computer error , spark plugs, coil(s) ...getting writers cramp,,

On my former 2001 ML 320, if I floored it and exceeded 6200 RPM, my ML
will go into limp mode and will have to stop, turn off the engine, and restart
it. Then everything will be fine again..

For what I understand, it is normal if you have selected a lower fixed gear
and so the ML will not autamatically shift gears and will reach the 6200
RPM limit.

When this happened, I always thought that I blew the engine, but it
was just the RPM limit which will cause the fuel supply to the engine
to be cut to protect it..
