2003 Navigation Installation
Hello,
I have a 2003 ML350. I have the DVD drive and the DVD. I want to install the unit in my car. I have seen some posts saying it is really easy, just remove the radion and install. However, how do I get the radio out first? I don't want to damage anything trying to do it. I do have a set of radio keys already. If someone has done this before or if you have the service bulletin on how to install this unit, can they please post it or email it to me? Thanks!

Ok,
I figured this out for anyone that is interested. Basically, you get a set of radio keys on eBay for about $8. On the bottom of the radio, there are 2 slots about the width of the key. You insert the key with the points towards the car doors. Once you insert these all the way in they will lock. You then put your finger through the loop of the key and use the keys as handles to pull the radio out. After you take the radio out, there are 4 phillips head screws on a plate on top of the radio with arrows engraved in the metal cover pointing to them. Remove these screws. Once this is done, you can remove the metal top plate from the radio. There is a false face plate above the cassette drive to cover the hole where the DVD drive goes. This face plate slides up and out. Remove this and discard or save if you want to put it back sometime. There will be a plastic cover over a wide connector cable plugged into the back of the radio where the DVD drive should go. You must remove the cover from the plug and slide the plastic cover piece up and out. Once you have removed these 2 pieces you can lower your DVD drive into the cage above the tape player. It slides in from the top. You should also see a grey connector doubled back and secured to the wiring harness that looks like it is not connected to anything. Remove the black electrical tape securing it. Connect the gray cable to the obvious connector on the DVD drive and the wide connector to the obvious connector on the DVD drive. Replace the plate on top over the DVD drive that you removed earlier and replace the 4 phillips head screws. Turn the radio over and remove the radio keys by pushing the locking tabs holding the keys inward. This should release the key and allow the radio key to slide out. Repeat for the other key. Once this is done, turn the radio upgright and slide it back into the dash (minding the cables are not caught) until you hear it click and lock in. Open the front screen panel on the radio and slide your DVD ROM into the drive. Close the front screen panel. Turn the radio on and you should be ready to go. You should get the MCS screen showing the picture of an ML. Hit the NAVI Menu button to configure the system. My system did not need to go to the dealer to get programmed at all. Just make sure you get the right DVD for your vehicle. Mine is the 2004 ML DVD. It even has a tiny restaurant to the south of me in a podunk town under 'places of interest'. Happy MB motoring!
