Periodically my wife's ML makes a whistling sound that appears to be coming from the driver's side dash upon start up and continues for a period of time ranging from a minute to several minutes but feels longer. Note:Even with all climate systems turned off, its still happens but not all the time. It is extremely annoying. Any ideas before I go to the dealership.

the noise is coming from the fuse box under the hood. there is a small little motor to circulate air in there. its called the module box aspirator motor. looks like a small hairdryer. its at the very bottom of the box. you might have to remove some components to see it and get to it. its really nothing to worry about. dealer might charge an hour to replace it.

 

This is a known problem that many people have. The culprit is the E-Box under the hood in the driver's area;it adjoins the fuse box. There is a fanthat makes noise when it gets dirty. The noise has been described as anything from a high pitched squeal to a whine. You can replace it or simply take it out, vacuum out the dust, lubricate the bearing and put your current one back in. The latter will save you $80-$100 for a new fan.
