Default 2006 the end of the G-Class

So, what are you thoughts on MB cancelling production of the G-Class in 2006??

This is due to it not passing new Euro safety standards being brought into place in the beginning of 2006

My thoughts are that you are entirely wrong.... the reason for not continuing the manufacture of the G is that Magna-Steyr, the company that produces the G at Graz, Austria wants to make room in its factory for the production of yet another more profitable (to make) Tescos-wagon.

This is not the end of the line, though.... Mercedes has guaranteed to a number of NATO armies using the G that it will continue to make its military version until 2025 at least. In the meantime negotiations are in progress with a number of possible candidates (among others ELBO in Greece and Tempo in India) to license-manufature the G in military and possibly civilian versions.

So, yes there will be that horrid thing called the new G possibly along with the real thing after 2006.

Cheers,

The problem is that MB is thinking of creating a new G-Class model instead of stopping production. I've seen some pirate pics and I can tell you that if what I've seen is really the new Gelandewagen than it is awful! It looks more like the new ML but with more rough edges! The G-Class will always be the G-Class, there is no SUV that can replace it. I think that only a genius could make an huge square box with absolutely no aerodynamics speed up to 100km/h in almost 5 secs as the G55K AMG does. Completely unbelievable. But then there is the GV12 by Brabus - the only 12 cylinder SUV in the world. So as you can see the G-Class has a lot to be remebered by! So don't worry folks - the Gelandewagen isn't going anywhere! The G-Class is like 2pac - "ALIVE WHILE REMEMBERED"

i have to agree...
the spy shots of new G is a total downgrade IMO...
it's more of $$$ ML class...
the current G will remain as classic...

"Old soldiers never die. They just fade away."

That's what going to happen to the G-Class basically. Last I heard, it will still be available but in smaller number. They want the ML to take it's place. Almost like the Hummer H1 and H2 thing. The H1 is still available but rarely discussed because the H2 was suppose to be the replacement.

But none of the new ones can match the off road and ruggedness of the G-Class. The Mercedes that was made to get dirty.

Mercedes getting rid of the G is a really big dissapointment, I think the style of the current one look rich with the boxy look. The new G just blends in with other vehicles...

At least they are calling it a GL instead of just the G so the difference will be known. I will have a real G one day.

It is replacing it in a since cause they are getting rid of the G in the US anyway. I went and looked at the New GL in person yesterday not as bad as i expected but still should not be considered as off-road ready.
