Default Will the CEL go off when fixing the problem?

I was told that the check ingine light will go off after the problem is fixed but was also told that I would have to take my car to the dealership for them to reset my comp system so it will go off after problem was fixed.Which is true?

Will not go off immediately unless "computer" is reset.

However the light should go off IF the problem has been resolved after so many drive cycles. i.e. the initiating code is no longer prevalent.

If the problem was cured,i.e. loose fuel cap, tripped the cel,and you screwed it on tight, then the light would go out after 3 clear drive samplings. The code would be stored longer so you could pull up the history. It can also be erased without the dealer,if you have your own obd2 scanner, which can be purchased for $39 at harbor freight tools.pm me if you need more info.
