What is this (on 86 300E)
Nice car, just bought w under 100K mi. Wondering what this hose between the alternator and the fender well is for. Seems like nothing since it is rotted away, but I don't like things I don't understand. Pics.

Answer
That is the cooling tube for the alternator harness.
It protects the harness from excess heat by channeling alternator impeller air flow over the wires routed inside the tube.

Thanks. Doesn't seem to be a required part but makes sense, especially considering that this car had a partial belly pan for aerodynamics once upon a time. With your information I googled and found this

Now I've got to figure out why all my lights (dash and outside except for headlights and flashers), half my gauges (still have vacuum, speedo and clock) and my AC all went out - I think this one may be for the dealership to deal with.
