IMO warming up at idle is a waste of time, engine wear, and fuel. The best way to "warm up " is to drive WITHOUT HIGH REVS until up to operating temp. The M5 won't let tou rev past 4K until up to temp, the 300C Hemi won't let you rev past 3500 in park, reving an engine without load is one of the worst things you can do.

Mine is 95 E320. I give just one minute and wait for the RPM to drop from 1.0 to 0.6. Mine car is struck in the second gear. It will only shift to 3/4/5th gear untill and unless the engine temprature rises to 80C or the speedometer touches 80KM. Well to be on the safe side i always take the slow lane specially on the main higways. The moment i feel that the temprature is around 80C then you can do anything what you like.
The car has done almost 200,000 KM and is perfectly fine.

I live in Pittsburgh where it sometimes gets down to zero or less. I have a '92 300E on which my dealer installed a block heater, I put theses on all my cars to make it easier on the engine during the winters. The block heater is plugged in thru a Thermocube which I buy from Sportys (aviation supply) which kicks on at 30 degrees and off at 45. Sporty's used to sell an electric battery heating blanket (for aircraft parked outside) which I used to also plug into the same circuit. Some experts on engine lifetime say that starting a cold engine is the same as 500 miles of driving! Anything an owner can do to minimize this shoud help.

PLUS use the best oil available Mobil 1 0w-40 or equivalent, which meets, or exceeds, MB spec.

In the winter I idle the car until the windows are clear so I can see. I only drive 2 miles so I need to run the car abit so that the water comes out of the exhaust so not to rust them out. The comfort level comes in the hedated seat.........Jimmy

I let it warm up a 2-3 mins in the morning.
The engine just drives better.
If I dont warm up, I sometimes notice a slight hesitation.
