Default W124 cruise control

My cruise control malfunctioned yesterday. I have an E320 1994 model cabriolet. I pushed the relevant stalk by the steering wheel to engage at 50mph and the control appeared to engage then quickly disengage.

I had previously used the cc without any problems on that journey.

Today, I took the car for a run and the cruise control worked - no problem.

Has anyone any ideas? Can the cruise control be used too much during a journey? Was I abusing the system instead of using it?

The cruise control system is a delicate proposition on Mercedes, and fails frequently. The most notorious culprit is the amplifier, which handles electronic functions of the system. Keep an eye on it and keep your fingers crossed.
