Default Starter may be bad..Need help

A couple of days ago i went to turn the key of my 1994 E320 Sedan and bam......the engine didnt run, all the lights were on, i could hear the 2 front fans spinning, and also i beleve i heard the starter spinning, but not making contact i guess with the engine. I checked the alternator..it is good....so is the battery, so im thinking the starter gear is not engaging. too bad i couldnt locate the starter. Where exactly would it be, rear of engine?....THanks for any info given.

yes. between the transmission bell housing and the engine block.

in the older days, the starter was on the front.
you need a strong muscle to crank the pulley with a Z shaped rod.

Hey, I've got a 1991 190E, and am trying to locate the starter also.. so i can test it... It intermittently won't crank. Fuel pump will run while trying to crank, NSS was just replaced, ignition switch and lock cylinder replaced due to tumbler locking up...Can anyone tell me where it might be? Or what else may be wrong with it?
