Default How To Tell If Starter Is Going Bad??

I have 82 300d which runs great, but yesterday I couldn't start the car, I changed the battery when I turned the ignition switch to start still no cranking, my dash lights do comes up then I did the test starting on neutral with the headlights on and everything works, but still no crank, then I ask someone to hammer the starter while I was on neutral and then I heard the most beautiful song from my car.

My question is do I have a faulty "starter" do I have to replace it now or maybe wait a little longer?

Thanks in advance

It depends on how often you have a friend with you to hammer on the starter to make it work.

If it's faulty, and you've identified it is, you should probably replace it.

First check the neutral saftey switch--they do go out, and will prevent your car from starting. There is a by-pass for the switch located on the upper fender well of the passenger side, just make sure the car is in park or "N". I'm sure there's a thread here that can walk you through it.
