My Key Keeps Beeping

When I turn my car off, get out, close door, leaving my key in the switch...the key keeps beeping forever, it doesn't stop.

It's a reminder to take the key with you when you leave the car.Why would you close the door and leave the key in the ignition?

If you leave your key in the ignition the battery will go flat because the computers will not go to sleep fully. i.e. Its a reminder as ohlord states.
